Independent Variable

Independent variables are those variables (‘X’ variables) that are assumed to have some statistical relationship with the dependent variable (‘Y’ variable). One of the aims of data modeling is to capture this relation in a mathematical form.

In QSAR modeling, descriptors are the independent variables that are believed to have some influence on the endpoint or the activity/property of our interest, which we are trying to model.

As shown in the figures above, molecular-weight and hydrophobic surface area are negatively correlated with (log) Aqueous Solubility. An increase in the former two variables implies a decrease in solubility and vice versa.
