Dependent Variable

In QSAR modeling, the endpoint or the activity/property of interest (‘Y’ column) that we are trying to model is our dependent variable whose value is assumed to be influenced by the independent variables (‘X’ columns) that happen to be descriptors in this case.

As shown in the figures above, (log) Aqueous Solubility is inversely ‘dependent’ or correlated with molecular-weight and hydrophobic surface area. An increase in the latter two properties implies a decrease in solubility and vice versa.
