December,
2008:
The highlight of this month is the QSAR modeling challenge
to be thrown open on the 17th December, 08 by QSARWorld. Watch out for
the announcement in this edition and we look forward to an enthusiastic
participation this year too!
Read about the role of NGOs in drug/disease research in our
‘Editors pick of the month section’. It is really a
refreshing read, we promise, with hope for affordable medical care.
Our featured article
of the month talks about on an aspect most QSAR users will have some
opinion on – on what is expected of a QSAR software / tool,
in the context of drug discovery. In lucid language, the article looks
at QSAR applications in different stages of drug discovery processes
and highlights where we are now and where we need to go from
here. What makes the article more interesting is that it is
written by a team of marketing people and trust them to give vent to
the bouquets and brickbats that they have received from the market,
during their selling experience!
Do not forget to check out the literature section where many relevant
articles on QSAR, including those on 3D QSAR, are highlighted.
Happy reading and do write in with your comments and contributions.
Warm regards,
’QSARworld’ Editorial Team

November,
2008:
Dear Patrons,
Greetings from QSARworld!
October saw the announcement of Nobel Prize; as well as the
‘Hansch award’! Though it might sound
preposterous to
announce both in the same breath, Hansch award is also a very unique
and a highly valued recognition in the world of QSAR.
Instituted
in 2000, the award is named after the honorary chair of
‘The Cheminformatics and QSAR Society’ and the
pioneer of
the interdisciplinary science of QSAR, Dr. Corwin Hansch, Professor
Emeritus at the Pomona College, Claremont, CA. Which is why,
we
are featuring this news as our ‘Editor’s pick of
the
month’. And we wish a very happy birthday to Dr
Corwin
Hansch.
On a different note, the award also reminds us of the many
‘unanswered riddles’ in the world of QSAR and the
potential
research opportunities they throw. These ‘open
areas’
stretch from ‘validation and applicability of qsar
models’
to ‘the curse of dimensionality’ and the elusive
‘Reverse or Inverse QSAR’.
Featured
article of the month:
This month’s featured article is by Dr Wendy Warr on
‘Cheminformatics Education’ – a
ringsider’s
view of the field of cheminformatics and the scope of its
education. The article is as much a wake-up call to the
academia
and industry as it is going to be a cherished reference for aspiring
students.
Miscellaneous:
We have finally fixed the substructure search facility in the
‘Databases’ section thus allowing users to query
the
databases available in
‘qsarworld’.
Write in with your comments and feedback and we look forward to your
continued patronage of the site.
Best regards,
QSARworld

Agreed, there is no dearth of opinions on what defines a
‘good’ qsar model and how to validate
one. But, here
is a very logical illustration, from the industry point of view, on
what ultimately matters while building a qsar model. Read our
Scientific Advisor Member, Dr Kas Subramanian’s opinion under
the
title ‘QSAR for decision support’.
Write in with your comments and
feedback and we look forward to your continued patronage of the site.
Best regards,
